A House Rises from the Ashes

After a wildfire blazed through Wyoming’s Casper Mountain in 2013, 37 buildings were left in ashes—including Eric Logan’s cabin, which had served as a retreat for his family since the 70s. However, like the mythological phoenix rising from its ashes, the cabin rose from the ashes when the architect designed and erected a new building on the foundation that was left behind. The blueprint was tailored to the family’s personal needs: Without electricity, running water, or cellular service, the Phoenix was designed to highlight the boundless nature that surrounded it. Wide windows flank the single volume, which is capped by a wood-burning stove for warmth and cooking. Charred timber frames the home, offering a beautiful but solemn reminder of the holiday house’s history.
