2018!

Hello Everyone. Hoping you all had restful holidays, surrounded by loved ones. And chocolate.

We’re back in swing as of today with the latest iteration of our Living Room series, which gathers recollections and histories from a dazzling cross-section of Bay Area artists, curators, and others. The online series is the archival tracings of a live event dreamed up several years ago by our founding editor-in-chief Suzanne Stein; you can read all about it, find links to the previous speakers, and see who’s yet to come in Suzanne’s introduction.

Our tradition of creating and collaborating on live events continues this winter with Limited Edition, a program exploring questions of lineage and legacy in conjunction with five SF performance organizations. In case you missed it, the announcement and my introduction are here, and links to the performances are here — if you’re floating around SF next week (and need some relief from art fair blah blah), please swing by the museum Thursday through Saturday to catch the first live offering of Limited Edition: DESIRE LINES: RETROFIT, site-specific performances at SFMOMA by the choreographers Rashaun Mitchell + Silas Riener. We’ll be there, come say hi!

Back to OS online: It’s a great pleasure to announce that critic and editor Mike Pepi is the guest editor for the eighth issue of our magazine, entitled Heavy Machinery, which launches in a few weeks. We’re excited to see where he takes us. And in the meantime, issue 7, West coast is something nobody with sense would understand, is complete.

Finally, I would like to introduce our three newest columnists in residence: artist, writer and editor Bean Gilsdorf; writer and teacher Sesshu Foster; and editor and writer Jessica Lynne. Bean and Jessica have written (and in Jessica’s case, edited) for us previously; Sesshu makes his OS debut as a columnist. Over the next four months, the three of them will publish on a rotating basis; what they choose to address, and how, is up to them. And once their official tenure is over, they will retain lifelong publishing rights, joining an ever-growing cohort of alumni columnists (seventy-four and counting!). We welcome them, and you, to Open Space in 2018.
