Photographing Ordered Chaos
Jim Golden neatly orders vast hoards of scissors, typewriters, and even thermoses in his photographs. While it might seem to some that looking at dozens of cell phones at once would erase the differences between the individual clamshells and brick phones, the Portland-based photographer instead highlights their subtle nuances. His years working behind the camera—and behind the screen—as a photographer and retoucher for major brands across America have clearly shaped his work, as his photographs demonstrate a carefully consideration of composition, color, and lighting.
Golden is part of a new generation of photographers, designers, and stylists exploring how we collect, sort, and better understand the objects in our lives, many of whom are featured in our book Visual Families. Browse the book in our online shop.
