Is Rio de Janeiro Truly Ready to Host the First Summer Olympics in South America?
When it was announced in 2009 that Rio de Janeiro would hold the first Summer Olympics in South America, the city was abuzz with anticipation and honor; with the opening ceremony rapidly approaching, photographer Gabriele Galimberti took a second look at the Marvelous City. What once promised pride and celebration is now marred by one of the worst economic recessions in Brazil’s history. With public skepticism at the decision to invest in football stadiums instead of hospitals and schools. The series of photographs is taken from an aerial view with athletes laying on the pitches and in the fields. Sans the movement and thrill of an exciting game or race, what is their purpose?
