Photographed by Gregor Hohenberg

Gestalten is pleased to present Trachten, an exhibition of extraordinary fashion photography by Gregor Hohenberg. This exclusive collection of work presents an unparalleled exploration of traditional German couture’s dazzling abundance of visual symbols and stylistic inspiration.

For five years, the Berlin-based photographer traveled through 22 German regions to uncover a surprising range of sartorial treasures. Hohenberg’s idea is as convincing as it is simple: to capture the beauty of local clothing on real people the way he does when shooting high fashion on models for international magazines. He presents the heritage costumes as contemporary clothing rather than museum goods, revealing the modernity in their cuts, materials, and colors. Especially in an era of extensive globalization, “Trachten,” as the traditional costumes are known in German, have become a unique attraction—standing out from the restless fashion scene and its fast-lived trends.

Gregor Hohenberg established his reputation as a leading German photographer with work for Vogue, GQ, Architectural Digest, Stern, Die Zeit, and other renowned publications. With a keen eye for detail, he remains interested in the people behind fashion phenomena. Hohenberg’s interest in German culture and history led him to the subject of traditional clothing, which, in his opinion, is an undeservingly neglected topic with almost inexhaustible potential.
