Moving Together, These Dance Companies Take Flight
The language of a dancer is often strictly non-verbal. As their bodies ripple and tense in evocative conversations, the dancers of a common company share a bond written into their collective muscle memory and sensory histories. For Float, artist Nir Arieli put the communal aspect of a dance company in front of the camera. He worked with top dance companies from around the world, asking each group to fall to the floor in unison. As each dancer collapses in time, their own senses of self dissolve into a collective identity—a distillation of each group into a single essence.
