Once considered to be a staple method of advertisement, neon signs have now become a kitsch nod to the early to mid 20th century. Perhaps more traditionally aligned with American culture than European, flickering shop signs have become iconic design artefacts, celebrated in this photography series, Lights of Budapest, by Isabel Val.
The aim of the photographer’s work is to create a contrast between the past and present, challenging the concept of modernity, and the illusion of fake prosperity in a previously Communist country. The bright backgrounds to the dilapidated signs offer a sense of optimism, whilst acting as a reminder of the city’s past.
Despite the colourful backgrounds in this particular series, Val explains that her subjects are normally dark: “I aim to capture everything out there to discover all that is within me. That quite dark side moving away from reality, from daily matters.”
