Well, this is pretty exciting. Yorkshire-based furniture designer Plaey Workshop has teamed up with Hot Chip to make a Record Dolly in celebration of the synth-pop band’s new album release, A Bath Full of Ecstasy.
Named A Dolly Full of Records to See, its design is also flooded with the colourful album artwork by Jeremy Deller and Fraser Muggeridge Studio, so it’s going to appeal to many of you out there. Simple, playful and fun – the furniture piece can hold up to 40 favourites and “currently listening to” records.
But don’t hang about: there will be an initial release of 30 limited edition Hot Chip X Plaey Record Dolly’s to pre-order through the Plaey Workshop webshop, which are set to be produced in November.
Alexis Taylor from Hot Chip said: “Matt Kelly at Plaey Workshop got in touch via Instagram, with a great proposal: a record dolly taking inspiration partly from the classic Isokon Penguin Donkey, and partly from your everyday record collector’s need to store, access and display their vinyl, and he set about making something simple, functional, pleasing and unique looking. Housed in the Jeremy Deller and Fraser Muggeridge Studio – adorned artwork from our latest album, A Bath Full of Ecstasy, we hope you will all enjoy A Dolly Full of Records to See!”
Matt Kelly from Plaey added: “Hot Chip are dream collaborators to launch our Record Dolly with. Through shared aesthetics and love of colour, it was a perfect fit. We already have some more Hot Chip related collaborators in mind for future Dolly designs, so I hope this will be the start of a beautiful creative process. The Dolly design takes cues from classic mid-century designs such as the Penguin Donkey while adding Plaey’s sense of purpose, play and personality.”
Heading to Design Junction in London this September? That’s where you’ll be able to see the Record Dolly on display at The Canopy in King Cross, London. Meanwhile, you can discover more at plaey.co.uk.
