Lee passed away at the age of 65.

San Francisco mayor Ed Lee passed away early Tuesday morning after suffering a heart attack. Lee, who rose to national fame for being the first Asian-American mayor of San Francisco, was a close ally of the tech community. He was 65.

“It is with profound sadness and terrible grief that we confirm that Mayor Edwin M. Lee passed away on Tuesday, December 12 at 1:11 a.m. at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. Family, friends and colleagues were at his side,” the mayor’s office said in a statement.

Board of Supervisors President London Breed has been sworn in as acting mayor.

The tech community sent condolences via Twitter. Here’s what we’ve seen so far; we’ll update as more come in.

I’m so sad to hear of the passing of Mayor Ed Lee, one of the nicest & kindest leaders I’ve ever known. I’ll always remember my favorite lunch with him where he asked me to focus Salesforce on improving the SFUSD Middle Schools. May the one who brings peace bring peace to all. pic.twitter.com/YGiQNBb7Mb

Ed Lee was a good man. When some tried to get his city to replicate NYC’s racially discriminatory stop-and-frisk program, he refused and resisted. As president of the NAACP, I was grateful he heard us then. Still am. https://t.co/zbt1VMjazk
