French TV channel Canal+ Sport has been rebranded with a series of idents created entirely in camera by Holman + Hunt and DBLG with set design by United Visual Artists

Athletes dressed in black were shot in a studio lined with an arc of 20 remote-controlled rotating mirrors, each edged with coloured lighting.



Holman + Hunt’s Richard Holman says that the idea was based on the fact that Canal+ visual branding is “all about the real world made abstract. so, knowing that, and wanting to do something that wasn’t the usual mash up of high speed photography and soulless CG, we started looking at a few references which seemed right.”

Among the references the team looked at were Eadweard Muybridge’s motion studies as well as Olafur Eliasson’s work for its use of light reflected in mirrored surfaces.



Holman + Hunt and DBLG worked with UVA to create the 20 rotating mirrors used on the shoot, each of which has LED lighting along its edges, controlled using a D3 rig. This making-of film explains more:
