The Hiroshima Home Spirals Around on Stilts
From its perch atop the residential sprawl of Hiroshima, the Toda House by Kimihiko Okada overlooks the Seto Inland Sea. The home is supported by a series of steel stilts, lifting the curving, singular volume a full story above its nearest neighbors as the central hallway bends counterclockwise from the first floor to the second. The wrap-around is divided into two stories under a contiguous slab roof that exists as a single plate. At the center of the rhombic floor plan is an inner courtyard complete with a picnic table and small garden.
