In 2010, Google launched an initiative called “Google Ideas,” made up of a think tank of engineers, researches and geopolitical experts, to build products that support expression and access to information in oppressive societies. The new website, created by design firm Hello Monday, features a globe reminiscent of Google Earth that can be used as a navigational element to audio interviews. Each interview, conducted with individuals working in places such as Libya and Ukraine, highlights the tribulations of Internet usage in unstable countries, as well as demonstrates the importance of products by Google Ideas. Links to product pages offer in-depth case studies about the social Internet issue they combat, such as DDoS attacks and falsified business reports, and link to applications for the Google Ideas think tank. All content, interviews and product pages are shareable on social media to increase awareness of how technology can help break down barriers in oppressive societies.
